Spain | Malaga

Malaga is situated in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula on the Costa Blanca, one of Spain’s most beautiful coastal areas. The Romans called it ‘Lucentum’, city of light. This characterizes this light-bathed town with palm trees everywhere, which opens itself towards the ocean and has a very pleasant climate.

Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians, and was later occupied by the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Moors. In 1487, the Catholic kings won back the town to their Christian beliefs.

The cathedral, the Alcazaba (the castle of the Moors), the fortress Gibralfaro, and the Roman theatre bear witness to its long history and rich culture.

Today, Malaga is a cosmopolitan metropolis, a commercial and cultural centre with Spain’s second biggest harbour. Bullfights, theatres, concerts, cinemas, and sports facilities offer every kind of modern entertainment.

In 1881, Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga and is probably the town’s most famous son. The house where he was born stands in the Plaza de Merced. Today this house is a museum, with free access to its exhibitions and video films.

Antonio Banderas – a ‘Malagueño’ – left Spain not long ago to become a film star in Hollywood. In spite of being very successful there, the most likely place to meet him is still Malaga or, more precisely, Marbella.
